Callaghan’s Rapids Conservation Area

Callaghan’s Rapids has two little falls, or I should say, rapid only a meter in height and forty to sixty meters in length across. Rapids are areas of shallow, fast-flowing water in a stream. When the river has less water, people tend to walk out and explore the river bed, but the time we went to visit, the river was flowing heavily after a huge rainfall, so we weren’t able to go near it. It has upper falls and lower falls, and both are a bit similar. We could only reach the upper falls, and lower falls trail weren’t accessible after a rainfall: many fallen trees and flooded trails.

This conservation area is only a few minutes away from communities like Marmora and Stirling, and it is about 45 minutes from Peterborough and Belleville. Callaghan’s Rapids Conservation Area contains 400 acres of natural wilderness that cradles the Crowe River that flows to Trent River.

It is extremely sad to hear about assaults towards this prime natural wilderness especially, illegal human activities such as driving ATV’s and trucks in the river, illegal camping, and partygoers destroying the habitat by tossing garbage. Repeated complaints of broken glass from parties along the river banks. The Crowe Valley Conservation Authority (CVCA) does not have the resources prepared to manage the abuse of this beautiful conservation area.

If you are planning to visit, please be mindful of conserving the area and respect the nature.

Travel Advice

Why go to Callaghan Rapids Conservation Area?

If you are someone who lives in Ontario and would like to do some outdoor activity with a family, friends or kids, it is a great place to visit, especially in the summer. Places with the waterbody help you cool off and a nice hike to the rapid helps you rejuvenize.

Is it worth a visit?

If you happen to be in Ontario then it is a great place to visit. However, if you are coming from another country or province, this conservation park may not be the best bet. However, each angle of the trail has a magnificent view and if you are a nature photographer you would like to capture the rapids.
